April 15 2013 will forever go down in history as one of the most tragic days Boston has known. Bolyston Street was the scene of horror just a year ago, where two pressure cooker bombs exploded towards the finish line at the Boston marathon. A couple of months ago we reported on the Jim Ryun Festival of Miles, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Olympic silver medalist and politician Jim Ryun breaking the four minute mile – the first time a high school boy had achieved the feat. Deciding what makes a race tough or not is often subjective. But in my humble opinion, there are three things that determine how tough a race is: the competition (does it attract elite competitors?), the course itself (terrain, the distance, the amount of climbing, etc.) and finally the climate (if it’s notoriously hot, cold, windy, etc.).
One of the toughest and most iconic ultramarathons, the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run between Squaw Valley ski resort and Auburn, California, will be shown via a livestream feed.

Most people think of the marathon as the ultimate sporting achievement, and despite only 1% of the world’s population ever having actually run one, completing one sits at the top of many people’s bucket list. But imagine running one backwards whilst juggling, or with a fridge on your back – for a few people, running 26.2 miles unimpeded is simply too easy.

Thirteen miles is long enough to get the endorphins flowing and leave you feeling accomplished, but short enough that you can train for it before the kids wake up.

Calling all of the ladies, women, girls. Where are you? If I started this blog by calling you to a girls night out for a happy hour, a social group run or a coffee chat amongst friends…would you come? I bet so! So I beg the question now…where are you when we want to talk and try minimalist/barefoot running and working out?
Sometimes we need to monkey around to remember the fun in life and the fun in running. Remember when you were a kid? The freedom of opening the door and running outside barefoot to chase your friends around the yard with no care in the world? Thanks barefoot…you’ve brought out the kid in us again!
It’s hard not to think about food this summer. Maybe it’s the promise of outdoor eating: the freedom of a backyard, the smell of barbeque.
