Beat the Blerch Marathon
Events

When comic author Matthew Inman – creator of The Oatmeal – published a work called ‘Why I Run’, he probably didn’t see it ending the way it has. The comic, which explains his struggle with motivation and disinclination to running, has already been turned into a book, and will soon come to life as a 10k, half or full marathon in Carnation, Washington on September 21 2014.

The six part original comic, Why I Run, explained Inman’s experiences running, and in particular trying to stay ahead of the ‘devil on the shoulder’ character of The Blerch: the little voice always encouraging to gourge on the contents of the fridge, or to chain-watch boxsets. A lot of people identified with it, and the marathon is the result. Inman describes the route as ‘a flat, out-and-back course that follows the Snoqualmie Valley Trail through forests and farms.’ Entry costs $50 for the 10k, $75 for the half marathon or $100 for the full marathon. And yes, Inman will be there running alongside you, and it’s possible there will also be ‘actual Blerches in fat-suits to chase you through the race’.

It’s not your usual race. Costumes are encouraged, and every aid station will be stocked with ‘large quantities of birthday cake’ as well as ‘nutella and magical grape beverages.’ Every runner who takes part will get a goody bag containing ‘stickers, snacks and Blerch surprises’, as well as a ‘I Beat The Blerch 2014’ shirt and medal.

Unusual it may be, but it certainly has an audience. At the time of writing, the official fan page of the event has 8,036 fans, so if you’re interested you should consider registering on the official Beat the Blerch site sooner rather than later. Good luck Blerch runners!
