One of the toughest and most iconic ultramarathons, the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run between Squaw Valley ski resort and Auburn, California, will be shown via a livestream feed.

Less than 400 runners take part in the race each year, due to the strict restriction on numbers, where the eventual participants are selected by lottery. Previously there was a ‘Two-Time Loser’ rule which provided guaranteed entry to those who had applied on two consecutive races, but due to the massive expansion of the race, this has been abandoned: the race now attracts thousands of applicants willing to pay the $370 entry fee. In recent years, less than 10% of those who apply have been selected.

It attracts the elite athletes, with a reputation for being tough. However, despite the release of ‘Unbreakable’, a film covering the 2010 race, very few people have seen just what the course actually entails.

Established in 1977, runners climb a total of 18,090 feet and descend a total of 22,970 feet. Competitors finishing within 24 hours receive a coveted silver belt buckle, while those finishing within the 30-hour overall time limit receive a bronze version.

The race is one of the four 100-mile races that comprise the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, which includes the Vermont 100, the Wasatch Front 100 in Utah, and the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado.

The course record for men stands at 14 hours, 46 minutes and 44 seconds, while the women’s record is 16 hours, 47 minutes and 19 seconds, both set in 2012.

The broadcast will be streamed by UltraSportsLive.TV at 5:00am on June 28 and will continue until the last runner crosses the line before the final cut-off.
