“BOIL-IN-A-BAG” MEALS: THE CHEAP WAY! JAKE THOMPSETT GIVES US TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE FAST AND EASY FOOD WHEN OUT ON THE HILL

Boil in a bag meals are brilliant for anyone who likes spending extended amounts of time in the hills and doesn't want the "faff" of cooking regular meals in a small camping stove. Boil in a bag meals basically mean that your whole meal is prepared inside a bag (which you can place in boiling water) ready to heat up and eat, therefore there's no need to wash your stove or bring a plate, the bag is your plate! Also, if you spend a lot of time in the hills then the costs of ready-made meals will soon add up, here’s how to eat lightweight in the hills and stay friends with your wallet at the same time:

There are two types of boil in a bag meals:

Wet Food
Pros-
•Generally taste better than dehydrated meals
•No crunchy bits!

Cons-
•Much heavier
•Take much longer to heat up thus using more gas/fuel

Dehydrated Food
Pros-
•Lightweight
•Easier to prepare as all you have to do is add boiling water•No crunchy bits!

Cons-
•Sometimes end up with crunchy bits left in them where food hasn’t rehydrated properly

How to make your dehydrated meals
Making your own boil in a bag meals is super cheap and super easy, although you must ensure that all the ingredients aren't perishable (e.g. raw meat), are lightweight, and are easy to prepare (e.g. make sure all you have to do is add water!), here's an example:

Example Meals
BREAKFAST 1: Porridge

What you will need:
• 1 x Pour and Store bag http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=264137083
• 1 x Stove and Gas
• 1 x Serving of Ready Brek
• 1 x Serving powdered milk
• Plenty of chocolate chunks, chips or powder! (can be supplemented with fruits etc.)

STEP 1
Add the servings of Ready Brek, powdered milk and chocolate into the Pour and Store bag

STEP 2
• When you're ready to cook your breakfast simply boil some water in your stove
• Then add a sufficient amount of boiled water to the contents of the Pour and Store bag
• I usually seal the Pour and Store bag for a minute or so to allow the porridge to absorb the water, make sure you stir the contents to prevent any lumps of milk powder!
• If the porridge isn't absorbing the water very well then you can place the sealed bag into the water contained with the stove and simmer for a couple of minutes, this can also be done to reheat the food if it goes cold

STEP 3
Tuck in and enjoy!

Some more ideas for Boil in a Bag meals:
DINNER 1: Mashed Potato and Sausage

What you will need:
• Pour and Store bag
• Stove and gas
• Smash (powdered potato)
• Dried or cured meat (e.g. salami)
• I add a chunk of butter for more calories and flavour
• Chilli powder or gravy granules (optional)
Boil water, and add to the bag contents, continue adding and stirring until the smash is of the preferred consistency

DINNER 2: Couscous

What you will need:
• Pour and Store bag
• Stove and gas
• Couscous
• Any other ingredients you fancy such as cured meats, spices etc., just make sure they aren't perishable!
Boil water, add to the bag and stir!

Top Tip: Purchase a long handled lightweight spoon to prevent getting your meal all over your knuckles as you scoop the contents out of the bottom of the bag
