Here are five of what we consider to be the best head- or helmet-mounted action cameras on the market in 2014.

GoPro HERO 3+ Black Edition

The Hero 3+ Black Edition is the top of the line action camera from head cam supremos GoPro. This brand new 3+Plus Black Edition is smaller and lighter than previous models by an impressive 20% and is currently the most powerful GoPro ever produced. It gives the widest and most immersive filming angle, plus new Auto Low Light gives super-fast frame adjustment. Weighing in at just 74 grams (2.6 oz), with 30% improvement on battery life, the Hero+ Black Edition lets you control up to 50 GoPro cameras at a range of almost 600 ft! Also compatible with iPhone or Android phone app.

Garmin Virb Elite

GARMIN_Virb_Elite

The Virb Elite is the newcomer from GPS specialists Garmin and launches with a self-contained ‘ruggedized’ unit, so no need for waterproof housing, unlike some of its rivals. With a lengthy recording battery life of three hours at 1080p and a 1.4” chroma screen, this neat little sports camera lets you frame shots, review footage and change settings easily. Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi make this high-quality, sophisticated Garmin technology.

iON Air Pro 3

IonAirPro3

Compared to some, iON is a relatively new player in the head cam market, but they’re already on the third edition of their Air Pro.  The Air Pro 3 is waterproof to 15m (without the need for a case), has built-in Wi-Fi, can record up to 60fps in Full HD and even has an anti-fog lens. But what sets this camera apart is that it can shoot 12 megapixel stills – a match for point and shoot cameras.  They offer 8GB of free cloud storage.

Drift Ghost-S

The Ghost-S is Drift’s top of the line sports action camera offering 60FPS at 1080p Full HD and a whopping 120FPS at 720p.  It’s packed full of features including a 12MP CMOS sensor, a 300˚ rotatable lens, an external mic socket, a two-way remote control and best of all, low light sensitivity. But what really makes this head camera stand out is that it’s waterproof straight out of the box – just make sure you have the hatch closed.

Contour +2

The Contour +2 is a premium head cam packed full of some great features: laser alignment to ensure you’re pointing in the right direction, GPS tracking that you can overlay in your video, lens rotation and an external mic jack.  It comes with a waterproof case, unlike its baby sister, the Contour ROAM2, which is waterproof even without a case.  This action camera shoots in Full HD 1080p at 30fps, but for those great slow motion shots, it can record an impressive 120 fps at 854 x 480.
