Fits unexpectedly like Merrell’s barefoot line Let me preface this review by saying I have been a satisfied Merrell customer for many years. I have purchased and been comfortable in at least 15 pairs. I bought these shoes to wear at the gym while on the elliptical and weight machines. After holding an on line conversation with a Merrell customer rep, I was expecting them to fit as Merrell gym sneakers normally fit. I was disappointed to find that they are more like Merrell’s barefoot series. The heel was very low and not comfortable for me. I returned the shoes and was promptly issued a credit. Kudos to Merrell for making the return so easy. I just wish I could have gotten better info before I made the purchase.

Barefoot shoes but not exactly I have been using Vibran five fingers for running on trails. I bought these shoes in Europe ( Merrell are not well distributed in Europe) and this was the only barefoot model ( I was looking for trail glove). My first impression is that the arch is very high and not so soft. I think that they will be not very appropriate for running, may be for gym will be ok.

A downgrade from Bare Access Ultra The Bare Access Ultra was the best running shoe I've ever had. I had six pairs, and although the quality of tread got worse with each pair, other than having to glue the occasional lug back on I never had any issues with them whatsoever. The flex does seem to have a much more durable sole, but the upper not so. I've only done 180km in them so far and they are already showing signs of breaking down. The BA ultras would all fail in the same place where the upper is attached to the mid-sole on the inside, but I got 700-900km out of every pair. We'll see how these hold up in the long term, but with the wear they're showing so far I'll be surprised if they last 500km. However, time will tell.

Downgrade but not that bad Reading most reviews here i would expect this shoe to be a terrible change on the previous model, but in my surprise it isn't that bad as people describe it. Yes, the bare access 4 is more comfortable shoe, but the Flex isn't that uncomfortable as people describe it. It's actually a great shoe, i really like it, if you compare it to other shoes on the market, it still stands out as an amazing all terrain shoe ! I honestly really like that they've made the outsole harder, and i now i am able to descend rocky downhills way faster than with the bare access 4. It's still grippy enough, still flexible, still has that bare feel to it ! Now the only downside i find in this shoe, and it's still not something i can get used to is the arch support. I have fairly high arches, and this things that they've made are still touching my arches too much. They're kinda pushing them, which can be kinda painful sometimes. If this shoe didn't have that arch support i would order 3 more pairs just to have for the future. But now i will have to wait for the new bare access and hope that Merrell will actually listen to it's customers. So overall, it's a great shoe, but compared to it's previous model kind of a downgrade.
