I believe that forging a connection with nature and community is an important part of health and overall wellbeing, and I want to help other women discover the joys and benefits that I have experienced in the outdoors. This is why I created Backcountry Women, to foster a supportive community, and to build opportunities and self sufficiency for women in nature.

Cedar Bog Birds Hill Provincial Park, Manitoba | Easy

The trail is known for its boardwalk throughout most of the trail, which takes visitors through a cedar swamp and forest, providing an up-close view of the unique plant and animal life of the area. The beauty of the large cedar forest is incredible and it's a nice hike year-round. You don't have to drive far from Winnipeg to explore!

Always bring water, a snack and layers for comfort. Bring binoculars for bird viewing and sunscreen in the summer.
Suburban - Easily accessible and close to an urban centre.

Easy - This trail is relatively flat and suitable for almost any fitness level.

• The terrain is flat and easy to navigate, with a few hills along the way.
• If you have a pup with you, make sure they are kept on a leash and are under your direct control, and don't leave any dog droppings behind. It's important to practice the Leave No Trace principles in order to keep this trail beautiful and accessible for many years to come.

Why do you love hiking?

Being outside and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is essential for managing my mental health. It's also been a great way to push myself out of my comfort zone, increase my confidence, and grow as a person.

What is your hiking essential and why?

My essential items for hiking include a quality pair of hiking shoes, a 35-litre backpack, plenty of water and snacks, a first-aid kit, a map, a GPS, a headlamp with a battery bank, a multitool with a knife, extra clothing, and a fire-starting kit. I bring these items because they help me to stay safe and comfortable while hiking.

Why is it important to wear the right shoes?

The right shoes will provide the support and cushioning you need to make your hike more enjoyable and provide the protection you need to keep your feet safe. They will also help you to stay on your feet longer and make the hike more enjoyable.
