I have purchased three pairs. Two for sons and one for me. Purchased around 1990 to 1993. Have resoled mine two or three times. They are great. However, since the wides are no longer made I cannot buy anymore Wilderness boots. I don't understand why Merrell discontinued widths and am very disappointed.

This has been the best for a long time, but alas, as you can see from the web site, they've stopped making them in widths! And since people don't all have feet that differ only in length, my wife (narrow) and I (wide) can't wear them any longer. Thus only 3 stars rather than 5.

I purchased my pair a bit more than a year ago, and I've had them long enough to write a thorough review. I've worn my pair extensively on trails and in field research, as well as in the city when there's snow/rain/ice. I'd say that there are about 200-300 miles on my boots at this point. The boots took a few weeks to break in fully. After the boots broke in, they've been wonderfully comfortable. The ankle support is great, the lacing is easy to adjust comfortably, there's enough room to use orthotic insoles, and there's enough toe space for the boot to be comfortable for long hours. Traction from the lug sole is great in almost all conditions. The hardware, sole, and leather have proven to be durable. The hardware is riveted solidly in (I see it lasting the lifetime of the boot), the leather is thick and rather resistant to scratching/gouging, and the sole hardly shows any wear. The plastic aglets on the laces fell apart after about six months, but that's a minor issue...I simply had a local shop install metal aglets. This is a great boot if you're looking for a heavier boot that'll last for a long time. The thickness of the leather, the one-piece construction, and quality of this boot are impressive in a day and age when our products have become so disposable. Plus, these boots look pretty good...they're a boot that you can wear in a dressy-casual setting if you so please.

I wear a size 11 and have a medium volume foot, normal arch. The fit is perfect. Finally someone has come up with a perfect toe box, plenty of room to allow the toes to spread out. Narrow heel to prevent slipping. I use them for backpacking and they have never caused a blister or hot spot. The fabric liner is smooth with no wrinkles to cause chafing. Excellent craftsmanship. Little break in required. Just the right amount of flex and support. Best leather boot I have found, and I have had them all including Limmer Lightweight, LaSportiva Glacier, Lowa Renegade, Scarpa Kailash, Zamberlan Civetta, Danner Mountain Light(terrible) and Galibier Rando(good boot). As you can tell I don't like Goretex in boots, much too hot and sweaty. I am also a traditionalist when it comes to backpacking. This is my second pair. Glad they still make them.

Merrell's Reply:

Thank you for the superb review and feedback on this classic hiking boot. Our Men's Wilderness - The Original has been around for many years. With the Norwegian welt construction makes for a classic, durable sole that can be resoles after many miles and wear on in them.
