I typically run in VFF’s but wanted a shoe better suited for long distance on the road. These shoes with 0 drop and 12mm of cushion seemed to be what I was looking for, so I went to REI to try them on. First opinion, very light weight and fit as expected (I tried them on with injinji socks). You will notice the higher arch support, at first walking around it was noticeable and then I took a quick jog around the store and the shoe felt great. Took them home and wore them around the house for the weekend. Then went for a run yesterday and I think these will be great shoes for long distance on the road. Going from VFF’s to these was no problem, I’ll continue running in my VFF’s but for the long distance I think I’m going to stick with the Bare Access Ultras. I can’t wait to get more miles on them.

On 7/30/2014, I gave this a 4 star due to its higher arch for a minimalist shoe. To my surprise, the higher arch is not posing any discomfort on longer 1 hour plus runs. This shoe along with the Vapor Glove are my "go to" shoes for road and trail running. Hopefully Merrell will continue to manufacture both of these models!!

Best shoes ever! Much like the Bare Access 3 but with more cushioning while still maintaining excellent forefoot flexibility and the best overall comfort ever. Better for me than anything from Brooks, Altra, Sketchers, or any other brand that I tried. This one and the Bare Access 3 are the only running shoes that I found to be absolutely excellent. I don't expect to even need any other running shoes except a pair of Innov8s such as the TrailRoc 245s for the trails. These Merrell shoe are also the most comfortable that I know of for any purpose far beyond just running. Try them! Solar Ben

I have been using Merrell shoes for more than six years now, specially for trail running. I have in particular been using WaterPro and various versions of that in the past few years for trail running even though the shoe is really designed for water sports. Most of my runs have multiple river and creek crossings, so I needed something that would dry quickly. I also was really pleased with the toe box for the WaterPro series. I recently bought the bare access ultra as I had a couple of 55k trail runs coming up. I chose the same size as the WaterPro after going through various apps to make sure the two sizes would correspond. I tested the shoe first on a couple of 10k treadmill runs. They performed fine, then onto a couple of easy 16k road/trail mix runs, and again fine. However the problem arose when I ran a 20k trail. The toe box was putting pressure on my index toe resulting in a blackened toe nail (left foot). The rubber sole also started to wear off very quickly after this first true trail run. The run was in a dry mountainous area with some rocks and thorny bushes. Nothing unusual as trail running goes, but after this first trail run the shoe looked as if used for a couple of years. I only have used the shoe for less than 80km and yet it looks all beat. I had expected more from a shoe designed for ultra runs. Now I am struggling to find alternatives for my upcoming runs!!!

Merrell's Reply:

Our WaterPro styles will offer a much more rugged sole and lug depth than the Barefoot styles, with a thinner outsole for a minimalist feel. Have you tried our All Out Rush with M-Select GRIP?
