Happy walkers at the start of the evening

No, Imran is not a fell runner, adventure racer or long-distance walker. Imran is 11, and he lives in Tower Hamlets. Before Wide Horizons met him, Imran had never actually been outside of Tower Hamlets – none of his friends had either.

But then something amazing happened. Imran and his classmates got to go on the adventure of a lifetime to Wales. One whole week away to spend in the outdoors trying new activities like mine exploration, mountain walking and abseiling.

Happy boy on high ropes

There were the natural pre-adventure preparations of course. Many of Imran’s friends wanted to know if they needed their passport to go to Wales. Others, when asked what their biggest fear was, didn’t give the usual answers of being away from home or ‘that the food wouldn’t be nice’. They were worried about how they could possibly stay on the side of the mountain as they walked up it, considering that it was such a steep vertical slope. Having never been on a mountain in real life before they struggled to imagine what it would be like when they arrived.

Although previously apprehensive about the mountain walk, Imran kept his team motivated all the way to the top. The outdoor tutors supervising the walk told Imran that he was “inspirational” for so confidently leading his team all the way to the summit and encouraging them to keep going. Imran became overwhelmed with emotion. No one had ever told him that he was inspirational before.

At Wide Horizons we provide thousands of adventures like the ones that Imran had. And we see the difference this makes to the lives of disadvantaged children every day. They may be small steps but they make a huge difference to the health and happiness of a child, and starts them on a journey towards a brighter future.

You can make a difference to the lives of more children by taking part in an adventure of your own. On Saturday 20th June 2015, Wide Horizons will be running an adventure trek in the dark from London to Kent. You will take on 50km of urban landscapes and idyllic countryside from sunset to sunrise. The route will see you walk (or run) some of the most famous trails in the South-East including the Green Chain Link, London Loop, Darent Valley Path and North Downs Way. Once cheered over the finish line you will be rewarded with a hot hearty breakfast!
