Product is good for my use - by , Jun 11, 2020

I train hunting retrievers as a hobby. I also hike several miles a day and hunt upland and waterfowl at least 30 days a year. I wanted a boot I could wear everyday that was comfortable, warm and completely waterproof. I've only had the boots a month but so far so good. They are breaking in nicely and are comfortable. The fit is good/ Most importantly they are waterproof. The only complaint is they are very heavy.

Long term review: I bought these Wilderness boots (stupidly) right before leaving to travel and hike in India and Thailand for 6-7 months in 1993 (yes, 1993). They are the most amazing boots I have EVER come across or worn. That being said, I didn't break them in before going and it was a bit torturous breaking them in "on the job". I hiked on all types of terrain, including wet conditions, and they were great, but as I said...breaking in took forever and they were too stiff on terrain where I needed to climb up rocky slopes where I need them to be a little more flexible in the front box. However, when I slide off the edge of a rocky waterfall - they provided excellent protection. Also, if you're hiking in very hot, humid weather, they're going to make your feet too hot. Again, they are amazing hiking, light mountaineering boots (you're going to need higher boots or good gaiters if you're planning on deeper show or seriously muddy areas). Many years later, they are still incredible, look amazing, but I sometimes think that they're still not broken in yet :) (I'm 1/2 joking). I'm happy that I bought them, but I wish I had bought them about 3-4 months before going on my trip...which is my recommendation to you...and get an extra set of laces.

25 years and going strong - by , Feb 07, 2020

I bought a pair of Merrell Wilderness boots in 1994 for an Outward Bound trip. I've put over 1,000 miles on these kicks since then and had them resoled once. What can I say? They are great. The uppers have held up fabulously. The inner lining is also in great shape. The boots are still stiff on cold mornings, but fit great when warmed up. They can take any type of pointy, rocky terrain I throw at them. And I've scratched the snot out of them over the years and they are as sturdy as ever. These were a great investment and have served me well.

I now have the boot fully broken in, and put a few miles on them. The sheep skin lining is perfect, sad to say it's the only thing about this boot Merrill did right. The tongue is a soft glove leather with flimsy gusset , that I have no doubt the laces will eat through in short order. They have a very spongy and cushioned midsole instead of a solid leather one. It offers no stability or support. They are basically a horrid tennis shoe designed to look like a boot. If your main reason for buying this boot is to sit around the coffee shop, you should be very stylish. If on the other hand you are looking for a solid American made boot that you can actually walk and hike in, look elsewhere this is not it.

Low quality with a high price. - by , Jul 10, 2019

This boot is a USA version of Merrell's old Italian made Wilderness boot. The new USA version is a cheap imitation of the old Italian version. The lower quality is apparent visually and in how the boot wears. When you compare the new vs old side by side it is like night and day. The old boot uses thick leather and stitching vs the new versions thin weak feeling leather. None of this would be a problem if the price reflected the lesser quality however Merrell is charging the same price. I don't know who at Merrell decided to try and trick customers but it is a bad move. I have provided a picture of the Italian version vs the USA version.

Great boot, but a recurring problem. - by , Apr 10, 2019

I have owned perhaps four pairs of the Wilderness over the last three decades, and I have loved them. I do extensive hiking on and off trail in New Hampshire's White Mountains and these boots have provided excellent support, traction and comfort in all kinds of terrain and weather (non-winter). They also break in quickly, I don't recall ever having a blister. However, I have now experienced the same serious problem with the last three pairs: the midsole delaminating from the Vibram sole. A pair I purchased in 2014 began delaminating in less than a year, if I recall correctly. The retailer where I bought them was kind enough to return them and acquire a new pair from Merrell, which I greatly appreciated from both parties. However, both boots of the replacement pair have now delaminated to the point where I can't use them for the upcoming spring/summer/fall season, with a gap several inches long. I may try to find a cobbler to attempt a repair, but I'm not sure it will work over time. Sadly, I don't think I can justify shelling out four bills for another pair unless this issue had been resolved in the last few years.

Great boots. Old school soul - by , Apr 04, 2019

Short story. Had my Wilderness for 27 years and they are still functional and bum around in them. The leather is so robust and has saved my feet against sharp rocks. The have plenty of scars but they have never compromised the overall boot. About 5 years ago decide to get some new boots the Danner Mountains, which are also nice. These 2 boots get compared a lot and seems like Danner gets the nod. Although they are nice, my money goes to the Wilderness all day long. I just picked up another pair of Wilderness today (made in Italy) and I’m so stoked!!! Now I have 3 nice pair of boots but I can’t wait to break in my new Wilderness. The leather is thicker, the tongue is a better simple design, and they’re are just bold! I know younger hikers may like all the new technology and glued soles in other boots, but trust me when I say those boots will be in the trash can in 10 years just when these Wilderness become a part of you. I hope the new USA are just as nice, but thanks Merrell for keeping it real. Love these boots!!!!!

I researched these boots for months due to the expense. I finally pulled the trigger on ordering a pair and I’m so glad that I did. They fit well and will just get better I think as I finish breaking them in. Have many other pairs of Merrell shoes, but these are my first pair of boots. I don’t think they will be my last.

I have had two pairs of these boots over the past 24 years. I bought my first pair in 1995 and they lasted until 2011; thats when I bought my second pair. I read a review that said the D-ring eyelets chewed up laces. Thats crazy. I changed my laces out for 3mm climbing cord, in the first hour of owning each pair. I have never changed out the 3mm cord that is in my current pair of boots. The cord is still going strong. In the fall, winter and early spring, I wear these boots almost everyday. They have been hiking in multiple National parks, the Australian Outback and South African bush. Please keep making the Wilderness Boot. I will be looking for a new pair, right around 2026!

Works for a short time - by , Nov 27, 2018

I bought these boots for a job in a conservation corps near Taos, NM. I shelled out the money for these boots and they did their job for a couple months. The waterproofing quickly wore out and the boots couldn't handle what I threw at them. The sole came off around the fifth month of owning them. You would think for the price they would hold up for a longer amount of time and that Merrell would stand behind their product and replace them! If you plan on using these boots everyday I would not recommend them.
