great out of the box - by , Sep 21, 2019

Best out-of-the-box fit of any leather boot (or shoes, for that matter) I've ever owned. They seem to run a tiny bit large (I'm usually a 9, but fit best in an 8.5 of these). The only weird thing is that the lace ferrules don't come up as high on the boot as I'd expect. This is more of a feature than a bug, but it will give more ankle freedom than most people are used to in hiking boots.

Wilderness Legends. - by , Sep 12, 2019

Absolutely love these boots, the craftsmanship is impeccable with top notch materials. Boots do require a breaking in period as they were stiff out of the box, the first time I wore them was to a vintage car show in Watkins Glen, NY and as I was Photographing classic Ferrari’s I noticed the car owners admiring the boots. Fit is good and looking forward to many years of trail hikes with these boots. As I haven’t had them that long perhaps a better review would be a year from now.

I love these boots! - by , Sep 06, 2019

I wear the Wilderness Legend Waterproof nearly everyday. My job has me doing everything from office work to trekking through the forest. They look good enough for the office and are rugged enough for the forest. They are indeed waterproof. I've crossed numerous streams and mud holes without a drop of water intruding to the interior. The comfort of these boots has spoiled me. After wearing these all day everything else is just plain uncomfortable. I'm considering buying a second pair to place in reserve.

Update earlier review. - by , Jul 26, 2019

Update my wilderness review. I believe Merrill really dropped the ball when it comes to this boot. Yes it is a quality made boot and the sheepskin lining is supitrior to any synthetic material on the market. But the last they choose for this boot is ridiculous. Was it a failed attempt to increase profits and build a one size fits all, instead of building a proper d and e width. Order a half size down length will be fine. But width will still be ridiculously large.

Great quality, American made boot. Runs extremely large, order half size down an expect them to still fit wide. Other than that, they are a comfortable boot for walking.

I got this for my boyfriend as winter shoes and he loves them! They got a bit discoloration from the salt but nothing than a good shine can’t correct. He says they are very comfy and waterproof. Great purchase!

Happy evolution - by , Mar 16, 2019

I bought the predecessor of this boot round about 25 years ago and used and abused them over the interval to great satisfaction. The boot that wouldn’t die. When they sadly finally did die I immediately went for an identical replacement. I’m happy to say the replacement is more comfortable out of the box and I was able to start trekking after only a short break-in. The soles are softer and the uppers more supple. Hopefully that’s due to improved materials and processes developed over the past decades. The construction appears to be 1st rate. I hope, and expect, to get the same durability and life from this pair. Oh, and love the traditional design.

Not What They Used To Be. - by , Feb 06, 2019

This is my 3rd pair of "Wilderness" boots. I was interested in the oxblood since I have the 'original' wilderness boots in black and brown. Browns 15 years old, blacks 6. They have been continuously dependable and rugged. Worth every penny, built to last. All that. But these wilderness 'legend' boots are different. First, the leather is very soft, much softer than before. They were comfortable the first time I wore them. The old boots took almost a year to break in properly. The tongue is a little cushion in soft leather, instead of a rugged support feature. Then the first time I wore them in the snow, less than 100 yards in, I felt water creeping in between the out-sole and the insole. That doesn't even happen to my 15 year old boot. I compared them to my older versions, and these have no stitching between the outsole and insole. allowing snow and melt to work its way in there. Instant failure. You cannot have a boot let snow and water in like that. That's not waterproof. It's not even water resistant. It doesn't matter how waterproof the material if it's seams leak. It's a $400 loafer. The oxblood look is nice. The leather is obviously top quality. Hence 2 stars. But these are NOT rugged. They are NOT water resistant. They're NOT as supportive as the old boots. Unfortunately these boots just aren't what they used to be. I wont buy them again. No I would not recommend them to a friend.

Quality craftsmanship, Excellent leather, Super comfortable - by , Jan 28, 2019

This legendary version of the Wilderness is what I've been waiting for. The Horween Buccaneer leather in Oxblood is eye catching to say the least. Buccaneer Chromexcel has all the great properties of Horween's Chromexcel leather with the addition of a waterproof finish. This is the perfect everyday walking boot. The width is a perfect fit for a D or E but the length is a lil longer than sizing suggests which is preferred if you plan on Hiking down steeper slopes. The interior leather lining with no GTX or waterproof membrane is exactly what I look for in a boot & the lower heel height with plenty of midsole cushioning is perfect for driving a manual car with 3 pedals without being clunky. The structure is sturdy without being stiff like a true Backpacking boot which like I said earlier is perfect for everyday walking. Minimal or no break in time needed with this boot. Quality craftsmanship throughout.
