Very comfortable/light weight. These are snow boots that fit like hiking boots. These are very comfortable right out of the box. I usually wear a 6-6.5 in Dansko, Keen and Merrell. I had ordered a Tan (which had sort of a plastic look), size 6 which were too snug. Then, returned for the black (which I like much better) in 6.5. They are a perfect fit with plenty of room to wiggle toes and with 400g of insulation I think a Smartwool weight sock will be great. Compared to my last pair of winter boots, these are much less chunky/clunky/bulky and feel more like a hiking boot than a snow boot. They also have great cushion in sole and ankle/arch support. CT has been unseasonably warm-to date, so I haven't been able to test them in the cold, ice and snow. I would rate 4 out of 5 stars based on fit and comfort only; I don't yet know about winter wear. I would suggest ordering 1/2 size larger than your regular size. {My only feedback for Merrell is to add a loop on the back of the boot, it would make getting them on easier. I'm surprised that these don't have one, most of their winter boots seem to have that detail.} I have tried on the Merrell Aurora 6" Ice Plus Waterproof Snow Boots with the Arctic Grip sole, (200g insulation). They were NO match for the Thermo Vortex--comfort wise: no arch support, no cushion inside the sole of the boot (like walking on concrete). They do seem true to size however. = ( let it snow
