During Mental Health Awareness Month this year we wanted to talk about how time spent outdoors, and specifically trail running, can have positive mental health effects.  We asked several of our Merrell Test Lab professional athletes to tell us how trail running has helped them improve their own mental health.

Rachel Tomajczyk – USA

Trail running has huge benefits for my mental health. Although the culture is changing, having run track and cross country in college, it was very easy to believe what a lot of college track athletes believe: “lighter equals faster.” Screen Shot 2023-05-03 at 3.15.58 PMThis led to an eating disorder through half of my college career that I eventually fought myself out of. Trail running helped me overcome the thought that “lighter is faster” because I have to be strong to run up and down mountains. If I’m light and weak, the trails and mountains will tear me apart! Running on the trails makes me feel grateful for the body I have, and when I’m standing on top of a mountain I just ran up, I feel strong and powerful.

The beauty of nature also boosts my mental health. I’ve run in tremendously different types of terrain, including forests of golden aspen trees in Flagstaff, lush mountains in the Bosque country of Spain, green Thai jungles teeming with life, and the stunning red rock wilderness of Sedona, just to name a few. My faith is very important to me, and I feel most spiritually connected when I’m in such awe-inspiring landscapes. This, in turn, makes me more grateful for this life and earth that I get to explore. Running in the vastness of the Grand Canyon or looking up at a giant mountain I’m about to climb gives me perspective on life as well. It makes me feel small, which humbles me and molds me into a more compassionate and empathetic person, and it places my heart in a position of gratitude that I’m able to live my life out.

Aum Gandhi – USA

Mental health is an ongoing struggle that so many people deal with in silence. I believe that everyone deals with it to some degree, no matter what walk of life you come from. Being able to have a platform with Merrell so that I can convey how running saved my life has been an experience that I can barely put into words. It’s right within the name, through the word “endure.” Life makes us endure many trials and tribulations that affect our mental health, and it’s my honor to show through action how the trails can help you prepare for life.

Reid Burrows – North America

I’ve struggled with my mental health for my entire adult life. When I was struggling the most with depression and my identity, I stumbled upon the trails in my backyard. The more time I spent in nature, the better I felt, and I was instantly hooked. The trails have created a safe space for me to quiet that side of my brain. While I am now a professional, I was introduced to this sport because of how much nature has helped my mental health. I continue to use trail running and exploring as a part of my toolkit for my overall well-being. The mental clarity and stress relief you’ll feel after spending time in nature are incredible. The sense of accomplishment after conquering a mountain, a race, a trail, or an FKT is equally empowering. So, get outside, lace up your Merrell trail shoes, and explore your local trails.

Brandon Miller – Canada

Trail running has been a huge benefit to my overall mental health. Before getting back into running post-university, I worked in a stressful field engineering job that consumed a significant portion of my life, leaving me with no work-life balance. As I rediscovered my love for running and took it a step further by jumping into trail running, I found that being out in nature really helped to quiet my mind. The varied terrain and beautiful scenery provide so many wonderful distractions that you wouldn’t typically find even when road running. When I saw the positive changes, I made it a priority to strive for a better work-life balance, which further improved my mental health.Screen Shot 2023-05-03 at 3.27.35 PM It has been a journey, and day-to-day life can still be a bit of a roller coaster. However, year over year, the improvement in my mental health is clear.

To our Merrell Community,

We are beginning a phased re-opening of our stores after 60+ days of working hard to keep our team, customers and community safe. Like many of you, we’ve missed the simple power of the outside and we’ve missed our customers as we all are adjusting to this new normal.

Our number one priority continues to be creating a safe and welcoming environment for all those working in and entering our stores.

Stores will be re-opening based on state and local guidelines. As we re-open, each store will have standardized protocols in place as we continue to adhere to recommendations and guidance from the CDC. We have a significant list of health and safety measures each store will take for the foreseeable future, including, but not limited to:

  • Observing social distancing through one-way shopping aisles, store capacity limits and other measures.
  • Requiring employees to wear face masks
  • Following enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols
  • Revising our checkout and service processes to maintain distancing and limit touchpoints
  • Limiting initial operating hours upon re-opening

We’ve been looking forward to safely re-opening our stores and being able to continue outfitting our customers to experience the outdoors. This pandemic has placed a heavy stress on many, and now more than ever, we’re embracing the simple power of being outside.

Update – 4/23/20

To our Merrell Community,

It’s been over a month since we closed our Michigan headquarters and our Merrell stores across the U.S. to protect our team and consumers from the spread of COVID-19.  Like countless organizations around the world, we’ve taken unprecedented steps to reduce pressure on our healthcare professionals and local communities by following the guidance and directives from local government officials. We’re hopeful that these steps are working so together, we can successfully flatten the curve.  Nothing about today is business as usual for our team – both on personal and work fronts.  We are managing the very best we can each day and I couldn’t be more proud of this team that I’m incredibly lucky to work with every day.

We’ve had to make incredibly difficult decisions over the past few months as it relates to our business – tough decisions in light of what’s happening, but ones that are critically important to protect the brand moving forward.  This week, we announced compensation changes for many on our team and we also had to make the difficult choice to furlough a portion of our team while much of the world is idled by the virus.  We know our employees depend on us and we’re working to support them as best as possible during these difficult times.

As it relates to our community, we’re leaning in to help do our part, too. Over the past few weeks, Merrell has donated thousands of shoes and boots to those on the frontlines of the crisis, and with your help we’re donating financially to Kids’ Food Basket – a grassroots, community solution to childhood hunger based in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  We have a couple of new initiatives in the works that we’ll be announcing in the next few days.  And, as always, we’re encouraging everyone to get outdoors (safely) whenever they can to share in the simple power of being outside.

While our stores remain closed at this time, we’re still able to meet the needs of the Merrell community by having our teams work in controlled, safe environments to fulfill orders placed on Merrell.com. We also encourage everyone to continue to support one of our many retail partners across the country.

2020 Merrell Future Shoe Designer Contest – Official Rules

Description. The Merrell Future Shoe Designer Contest (the “Contest”) begins at 12:01 am ET on April 26, 2020 and ends at 11:59 pm ET on May 15, 2020 (the “Contest Period”).  By participating in the Contest, participants (or, if a minor in their place of residence, the participant’s parent or legal guardian on his or her behalf) unconditionally accept and agree to comply with and abide by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor (as defined in Section 9), which shall be final and binding in all respects.  Receipt of a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.

Eligibility. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.  Parents or legal guardians of an Entrant (defined below) must be 18 years or older, and Entrants must be under 11 years old, at the time of entry. By participating in the Contest, you warrant and represent that: (a) the Photo and Artwork is Entrant’s original work, and you and/or Entrant are the sole and exclusive owner of all intellectual property rights in and to the Photo and Artwork; (b) use of the Photo and/or the Artwork as described in these Official Rules will not infringe the intellectual property or other rights of any third party, or violate any federal, state, or local laws or ordinances; (c) the Photo and the Artwork is not obscene or libelous, and does not contain anything defamatory or derogatory; (d) the Photo or Entry does not contain any virus, spyware, malware, trap door, worm, or any other device, mechanism or code that is injurious or damaging to software or hardware used in conjunction with the Contest; and (e) you have the right to grant the license in Section 3 above.  Entries not satisfying these criteria in any respect will be disqualified and removed from the Contest.

Winner Selection. On or around the week of May 18, 2020, Sponsor will designate a voting panel of Sponsor employees to select one (1) Grand Prize Winner from among all qualified entries received during the Contest Period.  The panel’s voting will be based 50% on creative use of color, 30% originality, and 20% brand appropriate.  Any attempt during the Contest Period to create false votes, automatically-generated votes, or otherwise tamper with, distort, or manipulate the voting process, all as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, will result in immediate disqualification.  In addition, Sponsor may disqualify any Entry and/or Artwork, in its sole discretion, if it determines that the Entry received votes in exchange for compensation or other consideration.

Odds of winning a prize depend on number of eligible entries received.  Prize winner will be notified through direct message or email, and may be required to complete and return an eligibility affidavit and liability/publicity release.  If a potential winner cannot be contacted within three (3) days after Sponsor’s first attempt, does not meet the eligibility criteria, does not fully comply with these Official Rules, or fails to sign and return the affidavit and/or release, then the potential winner forfeits the prize and an alternate winner will be selected.

If a prize winner is considered a minor in his or her jurisdiction of residence, the prize will be awarded in the name of, or to, the winner’s parent or legal guardian, who must accept the prize, execute any required documents, and agree to all obligations and undertakings of the winner, both on behalf of himself/herself and winner, or the prize may be forfeited and awarded to an alternate winner.  Under no circumstances will a prize be awarded as the result of an entry by an individual under 18 years of age, or for Artwork created by an individual over 11 years of age.

Prizes. One (1) Grand Prize:  consisting of (a) the opportunity to have Entrant’s Artwork, and/or the colors/patterns depicted in Entrant’s Artwork, (or modified versions thereof) applied to a pair of Sponsor’s kid’s-sized footwear to be produced for sale to the public, with no additional consideration provided to the Grand Prize Winner (footwear is anticipated to be the Altalight boot, with an expected release in December 2020 on Merrell.com); (b) one (1) free pair of such footwear depicting Entrant’s Artwork; and (c) a $450 Merrell gift card.  Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”) of Grand Prize is US$500.  Additional terms and conditions may apply to any gift cards, promotional codes, or similar prizes awarded.  Prizes are non-transferable, and may not be substituted for cash.  Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may substitute a prize (or prize component) of equal or greater value due to unavailability of prize (or prize component) for any reason.

General Conditions. Release. By receipt of any prize, winner (or, if a minor in his/her place of residence, the winner’s parent or legal guardian on his or her behalf) agrees that Sponsor, Instagram/Facebook/Twitter, their respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliated companies, and the agents, employees, directors and officers of these companies, are not liable whatsoever for any injuries, losses or damages of any kind resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize or from winner’s participation in the Contest.

To the Merrell community,

 The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve at a rapid pace, with new guidance and directives from government and regulators on a daily basis.  Out of an abundance of caution and complying with many state and local shelter in place orders, we are extending the temporary closure of our Merrell stores for the foreseeable future. Orders can still be placed on Merrell.com with free shipping while our stores are closed.

The health, safety and well-being of the Merrell team, our consumers, and the communities in which we live, work, and play continues to be our most important consideration today and always. We’ve taken unprecedented steps over the last few weeks to protect our teams and our consumers, and to reduce the pressure on our healthcare professionals and local communities.

Many members of the footwear industry are impacted by this global crisis. Merrell Donates 1,200 Pairs of Shoes to Those on the Frontlines of COVID-19 Pandemic

This week, we delivered 1,200 pairs of our shoes and boots (roughly $140,000 in retail value) to our local hospitals — Spectrum Health and Mercy Health, as well as to the Grand Rapids Fire Department and Police Department.  Additionally, we have made a donation of 250 neck gaiters to Mercy Health to be utilized as cloth masks should that backup become a need.

Merrell could not be more proud to call West Michigan home and we want to support those on the frontlines working tirelessly to protect the health and safety of everyone in our community and beyond.  We hope a new pair of shoes can be a bright spot for these brave people during these unprecedented times, and we thank them for their work and service to our community.

Merrell Instagram Contest Supporting Local Outdoor Retailers

We passed 300,000 followers @merrell!  Thank you to every one of you in our Merrell Community.  As Merrell Ambassador Will “Akuna” Robinson said recently, practicing social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t connect, we just need to do things differently – outside as well.  Merrell wants to help spread joy safely and respectfully outside and on the trail.   That is why between now and April 17th, we are giving away 30 gift cards worth $200 each supporting our local outdoor retailer partners (retailers will be chosen dependent on winner location).

2020 Merrell 300K Instagram Followers Contest – Official Rules

DescriptionThe 2020 Merrell 300K Instagram Followers Contest (the “Contest”) begins at 12:01 am EST on March 26, 2020, and ends at 11:59 pm EST on April 17, 2020 (the “Contest Period”).  By participating in the Contest, participants (or, if a minor in their place of residence, the participant’s parent or legal guardian on his or her behalf) unconditionally accept and agree to comply with and abide by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor (as defined in Section 10), which shall be final and binding in all respects.  Receipt of a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein

Eligibility.  NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.  Must be 18 years or older at the time of entry and a legal resident of the fifty (50) United States (including the District of Columbia).  Employees, officers, and directors of Sponsor, their respective parents, subsidiaries, and agents, as well as the immediate family (defined as parents, spouses, children, siblings, and grandparents) and household members of each such employee, officer, and director are not eligible.  Void where prohibited by law.  Void in New York and Florida.  All federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations apply

How to Enter.  To enter, you must: (a) have an Instagram account during the Contest Period, (b) post a picture of yourself outdoors acting responsibly and wearing Merrell®, and (c) use the tag @Merrell during the Contest Period.  LIMIT ONE (1) ENTRY PER PERSON.  Incomplete entries and those containing invalid e-mail addresses will be disqualified and removed from the Contest.  Any attempt to enter using multiple/different email addresses, social media account names, identities, registrations and logins, or any other methods will void all of an entrant’s entries and that entrant will be disqualified.  Use of any automated system to participate is prohibited and will result in disqualification.

Entries become the exclusive property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.  By entering the Contest, you grant Sponsor a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable, non-exclusive license to reproduce, distribute, display, exhibit, transmit, broadcast, televise, digitize, and otherwise use your entry in any manner, form, or format now or hereinafter created, including on the internet, and for any purpose, including, but not limited to, advertising or promotion of Sponsor and its goods or services. You further agree that Sponsor may use your name, likeness, and written entry all without further consent from or payment to you.
