I have purchased three pairs. Two for sons and one for me. Purchased around 1990 to 1993. Have resoled mine two or three times. They are great. However, since the wides are no longer made I cannot buy anymore Wilderness boots. I don't understand why Merrell discontinued widths and am very disappointed.

This has been the best for a long time, but alas, as you can see from the web site, they've stopped making them in widths! And since people don't all have feet that differ only in length, my wife (narrow) and I (wide) can't wear them any longer. Thus only 3 stars rather than 5.

  • They must have new soles at least every 20 years!

These boots are the only footwear that has lasted more than a few years. After 20 years I must get new soles. I decided to go ahead and buy a new pair. Why not? At a cost of $15 a year I think they are as affordable as anything on the market. Not to mention they are the most comfortable pair of boots or shoes I have owned to date! Thanks Merrell for a superior product. They have lasted decades and I expect will continue to do so. Now who do I speak to about getting new soles?

When I received these boots I was astonished with how much beefier they are than they appeared in the picture, which is a good thing for what essentially is protective gear. The ankle support far exceeded what I expected. There was a little break in required but not too bad. Currently I haven't taken these on any extended hikes but I have every confidence in their ability to function flawlessly as they have on all my day hikes. Now that I've broken them in, they are extremely comfortable with no hot spots or problem areas. It's a shame the price is so high because it keeps these out of reach of casual hikers but when you factor in the longevity of these versus the boots that cost half as much you really are getting a much better value with these boots. There is just something great about having a simple product of quality that you can enjoy for several decades. I can only imagine how good a boot with 10+ Years of break in will feel on my feet. There is something to be said for having a boot that can have the soul replaced. On a side note, I've mainly used these in very hot and humid conditions and they do an OK job with transferring heat but not moisture so sweat does present challenges. They are definitely sock sweaters and you'll want several quality wool socks to rotate frequently on longer hikes. In theory this is good practice regardless of the boot but I could see issues with this boot, and your feet, if you get it waterlogged to the point where it can't dry. Just one of the few downsides to a leather boot and a price I gladly pay for the benefits of leather. Socks are cheap and easy to carry while a great fitting comfortable boots aren't. Basically what I'm saying is these probably wouldn't be my first choice if I were going to a rain forest but they can survive a sweltering June in the Ozarks if precaution is used. In low humidity climates you are good to go regardless of temperature.

I had a pair of these boots bought back in 1991. Recently the soles came away. My husband threw them out not knowing I had planned to repair them. Since they are not offered in womens sizing should you ever decide to offer a mens 7 I will be buying another pair! The best most comfortable boots.
