First off, I finally had to retire my Phaser Peak's after over 4 years and quite a few thousand miles (and quite a few summits). I had grown use to sweating through my socks every time I wore them, but I thought that was the price of having warm feet with a waterproof boot. Now to the Annex Mid Gore-Tex. First off, you have to give these boots 2-4 days of light to heavy wear before they fit perfectly (and I mean, perfectly). For me, that was the first 3 days after I got them on Christmas Day. They tackled ice, snow, slush, rain, mud, and general walking indoors/outdoors in single digits with wind chills at about -10F. The treads on these boots are fabulous, I almost want to say they are better than my Phaser Peaks were when I got them. Now to my biggest issue with any boot I wear: foot sweat. I was utterly surprised by how dry my foot was after wearing these boots for 10 hours straight with thick wool socks (Smartwool makes amazing socks, buy some) and doing everything from driving with heat pounding on my boots, to walking, to moving stuff around (as in heavy lifting), and then sitting on a couch in a heated room. Not once was my foot "too warm". I took the boots off, expecting my sock to be at least damp - it was completely dry. The breath-ability of these boots is amazing (I chalk that up to paying for gore-tex and Merrell's high quality products) and you do not sacrifice warmth. These boots are also quite stylish and go great with a pair of blue jeans (I ordered the Blue Wing style - see attached picture) The fit of these boots after I have worn them for about 3 weeks? Amazing. More comfortable than any tennis shoe, slip on, slipper, or sandal I have ever owned! I will be wearing these boots for fall, winter, and spring until they wear out. Then I will buy another pair. I am heavily considering buying the low cut "hiking shoe" style of this for the summer. So if you want a boot that keeps your foot dry from the outside variables, dry on the inside, as warm as you need, and incredibly comfortable and supportive of your foot and ankle, pick these up. These boots are well worth the price I paid (about $170 through Merrell) and that price is still a lot easier to stomach than other brands "high end" multi-functionality boots. Don't forget Merrell's great warranty either. Once you buy Merrell, you will never buy anything else again. They are that amazing. (Picture included from a casual hike on 1/4/15, the day it was 61F (then 15F the next day with a wind chill near 0). My girlfriend is a photographer and I love taking silly photos)

I love the shoes, but I would like to know how to maintain them and how to keep the waterproofing up to standards.

Merrell's Reply:

We recommend within the first couple of years to treat your footwear with a waterproofing wax or spray. If you should need further assistance the team is here to help at 800.288.3124.

Been wearing nothing but merrel boots and shoes for years and I walk and hike about 50 miles per week in all kinds of weather and conditions. These boots are very comfortable with a good fit. I expect them to last as long as my other merrells.
