As a longtime fan of the Trail Glove, and more recently, the Ascend Glove, i was eager to try the Bare Access Trail. I like having shoes with differing amounts of cushioning/protection, and the extra 2 mm of midsole in the BAT makes more of a difference than you would think. The fit is true to size as expected, since Merrell is very consistent in my experience. There is a more pronounced arch support in these shoes, but it doesn't bother me. I find them very comfortable while running, and the traction and rock protection are great. The upper is a little beefier than the Ascend Glove, but the shoe is still light, and the zero drop and wide toebox are similar to the TG and AG. One big difference between these and the AG besides the arch support is that in the heel cup there are very pronounced pads, one on each side, i guess for comfort and to help lock the back of the foot in place in the shoe. This felt a little unusual at first, but i do not notice it at all while running. The laces are too short if you want to use the extra eyelets, but i get around this by skipping the second set of eyelets when lacing the shoes. I bought the shoes in the Green/Yellow color scheme and i have to say that i think this is my favorite Merrell color combination yet. I got repeated compliments on the shoes when i wore them to work to break them in before running in them. I attached a picture of the color i bought since it is not shown here on Merrell's page. Overall this is another great shoe from Merrell, and will be my go-to trail running shoe when i want more cushioning/protection than the Ascend Glove offers. Hardcore minimalist runners probably will not like these, but as long as Merrell keeps making them, i'll keep buying new pairs. Lastly, even though the whole barefoot/minimal trend seems to have waned, i hope Merrell continues to offer shoes/boots with zero drop and the wide toebox. I can't imagine wearing anything else at this point.

I've been wearing zero drop shoes from the major shoe companies since they first came out. Too bad it took me this long to find Merrell. This is the best shoe I've ever put on. I have a thin foot and it still fits great.

This morning was my third run in these shoes and the best so far. I have been running for 25 years, I am a forefoot striker and have been minimal for about 12 years. Have purchased all the incarnations for Merrell barefoot collection since their inception and I would say the Bare Access Ultra is the best so far. Enough room in the forefoot, but not too much, just enough cushioning, without being too cushy. The sizing is true to size, whereas I usually have to size up in running shoes. All in all I rate this shoe a 5 out of 5. Keep it up Merrell!

I've been running in a zero drop shoe for a while now, and love the concept. This is the only one that provides just the right amount of support and cushioning for my foot. Thanks Merrell! well done!
