I love the Merrell Bare Access series. This is my third pair. My only complaint for the older models was the lack of traction. I play a lot of field sports but not serious enough to justify cleats. These rock! Bare Access comfort but with traction! Additionally, I have been having a bit of troupe with my Achilles tendon. The extra padding in the heel is a huge bonus. I will never own another brand of athletic shoes! Thanks Merrell.

I've bought pretty much every shoe from Merrell's Bare Access and Glove series of minimalist shoes and each version gets a little bit better. I loved the Ascend Gloves but wanted a better built upper and a tiny bit more cushioning and it seems like Merrell was reading my mind with these! From wearing and running with these on both pavement leading to the trail and then on a rocky, rooty, muddy trails these have performed great! Enough ground feel for good feedback on what my foot is actually doing, but enough protection that the small sharp rocks and stones don't hurt my foot. Grippy even in mud and muck. I love that the upper is seemingly much more solidly built than the Ascend Gloves, yet my size 12's in men only weigh 8.4 ounces each. I am running my first 100 mile ultramarathon in September and these will be perfect for that! I'll probably be picking up another pair for backup! Great job Merrell!

  • Early take: I love this shoe

I run on Bare Access 2s for roads and love them, so I jumped on this Trail version when it released. I've only put in a few runs with them so far, but my early take is: these are great. Same fit and feel as the Bare Access road shoes (zero drop, cushioned but not mushy), with a slightly stiffer sole (in a good, grippy way) and great traction for mixed surface, single track, and dirt roads. The lug pattern is similar to but a little deeper than the lugs on the Ascend shoe, and I like the balance it strikes between grip and ground-feel on choppy terrain (both ups and downs). If I knew I were going on a run with a lot of muddy ups, I'd probably wear something a little more cleat-like, but outside of that ]situation, this is a great shoe for me. (Re: fit: 10 feels true to size; wide toe box leaves wiggling room; I have crazy high arches but get no pain or pressure across the top of my foot from these, which is why I love Merrell's Bare line so very much to begin with.)

This was my third pair of barefoot shoes. I started about three years ago because I needed a shoe with a minimal sole for Tai Chi and martial arts in general. I liked them and I quickly bought the hiking glove which I wore this morning as I did my Tai Chi. When I got the new pair I was a little concerned at first because the soles are definitely thicker. I haven't needed them for my Tai Chi, but I have come to appreciate the extra padding on the soles, especially when I wear them to work. I have come to think that more sole and padding is not necessarily a good thing for me. I like the feeling and balance that comes from greater feel of the surfaces that I walk on. I am 64 years old and I also use my Merrell's for hiking.
