I just moved from Scandinavia to Bolivia. The last couple of yeara I have lived in a coastal climate in Norway, where things can get really wet and really cold at the same time, to waterproofs have been a must for pretty much every season, if you wanto to stay active with over 250 rain days per year. Before that I lived in the north of Sweden, where the winter often exposes you to below -30 celsius. So when I moved to Bolivia, I found myself in a bit of a problem, I needed something in between, something versatile, and light. I spend most of my time in high altitude places, and being a photographer, I usually need to be out before first light, or stay out past sundown, and temperature here at this altitude changes really fast. So I got this jacket, and must say I really like it. If I am moving, it keeps me comfortable with a technical shirt and a wool sweater underneath, and if I am standing still, or lying in wait, I pull a soft shell jacket on top, and I am nice and snug to well below freezing. It is also very comfortable as an extra layer inside a sleeping bag in the winter here, and it takes no space at all in a rucksack. Furthermore it doesn't make too much noise, important when shooting wildlife. Also, being 6'4", well above the Bolivian average, it helps that it doesn't make me absolutely massive, as a thicker down jacket does. As a photographer it is better to be a little less intimidating... I can't really find any faults with this jacket, but if I had to give some constructive feedback, I would say that a hole for the thumbs in the sleeves would be welcome, and also two inside pockets with zippers for wallets and mobile phone would be a good addition, but like I said, that is only if I really had to come up with something. A comment on the sizing: I was really happy to find that an XL actually fits me. When making the transition from Scandinavia to Southamerica, I found that most clothes are made for the US, which seems to mean that anything for my height and arm length requires me to gain 25% in weight. This jacket, however, fits snugly and perfectly, a rare thing for me these days. Let me know if you would like some shots of the jacket being used in the Bolivian highlands :) Regards Anders

The Quentin jacket is so versatile. I have used it as casual wear, out shoveling snow, skating, winter hiking, etc. Keeps you warm in sub-zero (Celsius), packs down small. The stretch side panels makes it less bulky especially in armpit area. Great design and choice/placement of materials. It fits snug so in doubt go up 1 size.

I bought this jacket for the cool fall nights, and for layering when the temperature really drops. Really impressed with it, very comfortable. Would recommend this to anyone.

Merrell's Reply:

With the M-Select Warn and Down-Proof, you are going to stay warm on those cool fall hikes and do not have to worry about the bulkiness of a thicker jacket. Thank you so much for recommending this to others and sharing this review. Now get out there and hit the trails.

  • Good for cild conditions and for harsher windless winter conditions

This jacket did real well as a primary jacket in colder conditions (sub freezing) as long as there was little to know wind. The side vents extend all the way down the arms, so while if you are participating in heavy activity you won't overheat, it does allow for wind to get through. I paired it with a a soft shell which worked really well.

Merrell's Reply:

Wonderful! This is great when you are planning to be active and need something fitted. With the Down-Proof and Smooth-Face Active Fleece mix, you are bound to stay nice and warm. Just like you mentioned this style is not wind resistant, so pairing it with a soft shell is a great idea!
