Race through the trees, splash through streams and inhale the fresh, clean air of the wilderness with the men’s Trail Glove 2 from Merrell. These men’s barefoot running shoes are an enhancement of our previous model. They’re super lightweight and flexible with a low profile, anti-microbial lining, and thin mid- and outsole. With a subtle change to the rock plate for a flattened forefoot and soft fabric upper, a great shoe just got greater. There’s more flexibility for an amped up workout and better protection against rocks and roots. A proven lightweight running shoe on the trail, the Trail Glove 2 delivers a reliable, close to the ground fit while protecting feet from cold conditions and rough terrain. When you’re looking for a men’s minimalist running shoe that’s durable, fits like a glove and has strong Vibram traction on both wet and dry surfaces, choose the Trail Glove 2 from Merrell. This is a subtle, and in my judgment, successful update of my favorite trail shoe. Merrell has wisely chosen to make only minor changes to the most popular minimalist trail shoe on the market. If you are, like many “barefoot” runners, like the heroine of the Princess and the Pea, you’ll be pleased with the most significant improvement. The rock plate no longer feels like a bulge in the forefoot part of the sole. I had to put the old version on one foot, and the new model on the other, to fully appreciate the difference. The outsole looks exactly the same (I believe it is), but the change to the rock plate means that the sole flattens out more in the forefoot, and one no longer feels like the rock plate is something one must run over. Further, as the sole now feels less laterally rounded, the upper, made from a new, silkier fabric, allows for more forefoot width as the sole spreads out. So, while the width of the sole hasn’t changed, the shoe feels wider in the forefoot. The base of the lace box is also wider, so there is more width across the metatarsals. Merrell has eliminated the lower pairs of Omnifit lace closures. I really like these closures and the snug midfoot fit they provide, but the remaining upper two pair are more than adequate for accomplishing this. So: Likes: Disappearing rock plate Softer fabric upper, wider across the forefoot Mixed Omnifit and standard lacing system. Dislike: Nutten. A great shoe just got better! Note: my first impression is that the new shoes feel less slippery than did their predecessor. More flex in the forefoot, both lateral and longitudinal, seems to be the only reason for this. The old shoe felt like one was landing on a ball (or, at least, on a slightly rounded outsole), with only a small portion of the forefoot outsole firmly on the ground when one was running on a flat surface. The new rock plate lets the sole flatten or wrap around rocks or lumps in the running surface, while still giving adequate protection.

We are thrilled you love the minor improvements to this Barefoot style and that we were able to make a great shoe even better in your eyes. We appreciate your comparisons between the old and new version. Enjoy your "barefoot" running with adequate protection!

This is the biggest abomination of a hiking shoe I have ever seen. You some how manage to make the best trail shoe on the planet and then color it in the ugliest colors known to man. I ended up with a pair of these in the lime green and I won't even wear them outside of the house. Its a real shame cause the fit and feel of these shoes are amazing. Who ever is in charge of the color schemes for this shoe has to go. Not one of your other hiking shoes looks like a 5 year old colored them in. But beyond the hideous colors these shoes are miles ahead of any other trail shoe on the market. It's a smooth transition between the previous model of trail glove. This shoe seems to be everything the last one wanted to be as far as fit and form. You will feel less of the seams in the shoe and more of your terrain. I would definitely recommend these if you are into the whole new neon fad shoe. But hopefully for the Hikers that have supported this company for years they can get back to what they do best and leave the hideous neon shoes to Nike.

This was the first "zero drop" shoe I ever purchased and my initial plunge into the world of barefoot/minimalist shoes. I had high hopes after doing some reading and research on the varieties out there and the benefits, and it lives up to the hype. My legs took a few weeks to get used to running in the shoes, which was expected. These shoes work great for me, whether running in grass, on streets, along trails, and even on ice. I love these shoes and convinced my wife to get a pair in the near future, along with some shoes to wear for work. The only real issue I've run into is that the shoes aren't as tall as what I'm used to, so I frequently have the leg of my pants slip under the heel of my shoe when I'm walking or running. A minor inconvenience that will be eliminated as soon as it gets warm enough for shorts!

We are glad after all of your research you choose these excellent trail running Barefoot's. Your review is greatly appreciated and thank you for talking your wife into the Barefoot style, too!

I absolutely love these shoes. I actually started out wearing minimalist shoes with the vibram five fingers after an injury. After about a year, I realized those shoes didn't have the cushion I need for longer runs. For short runs they were great but as I run more long distances the wear on my legs would increase. I didn't want to stray from minimalists as they have helped my form and reduced a lot of stress on my knees, but I didn't want to stick with 5 fingers either. These were just what I needed. They have the perfect balance of fit, comfort, durability and cushion. I've put over 1500 miles on these shoes since I've had them and they've only recently started to get significantly worn down. The soles are still in great condition I've just started getting holes in the side of the shoe just above the arch. You've won me over to your brand with these shoes and when they go I will definitely be buying from you again, so thanks for such a great product!

Merrell's Reply:

Thank you for racking up those miles on these! The Trail Glove 2's are an excellent trail running shoe with a durable Vibram sole and excellent grip/tread for the rougher terrain. We can't wait for you to try some of our other Barefoot styles.

Hey guys… I'm really looking forward to ordering these shoes but I really don't know what size I should get. I wear a size 8 on my Nike's and Asics. Can anyone please help? Thanks so much.
