I bought these boots for function not a fashion show. They are comfortable and sturdy. I was worried about the leather's durability since it is very soft. I have been pleasantly suprised so far. I've put about 40 miles on these without any complaints. If you want a tough boot that meets the trail head on, I would definitely gives these boots a shot.

I have had these boots for a month or more now and I was finally able to find if they are truly waterproof or not today. Walked about 6 miles today in 6-9 inches of snow and I can say that they are indeed waterproof (unlike the issues I had 2 years ago with the Phaser Peaks and the left foot getting wet in 2 inches of snow). My foot never felt wet even when I went inside at the 4 mile mark and all of the snow melted off the boots. The boots take about 2 days to break in (normal for me of any Merrell boots) and after that, they are good to go. All I can hope is that this pair of boots last this time. I have 4 pairs of boots that I rotate through, so my boots only get worn usually twice a week. I have a pair of Chameleon 4’s that are starting to fall apart after 2 years (left heal strap broke after a month, original laces went in 6 months, shoelaces ripped through the ankle strap about 4 months ago and now the right boot sole is coming apart). The jungle mocs I use to walk to the latrine in the morning and at night, the left shoe at the back, the suede is starting to fall apart. None of these boots or shoes get a lot of wear and tear, but so far they all start to fail about the 2 year mark, I can’t imagine what they would be like if they were worn as an everyday boot/shoe. So for that reason, I can’t give these a 5 star rating at this time, if they last past the 2 year mark without falling apart, then I will come back and rate them as a 5 star, but for now my experience with Merrell boots/shoes is that they are not very durable.

When I phoned in to inquire what happened to the Legacy boot and what would be the best replacement for that boot in your new line-up, the representative listened to what I liked about the Legacy and asked me about how I used my boots. He indicated that the Mattertal would most likely be the best boot for my needs. Again, Merrell customer service rocks! This is my third pair of Merrell boots. It is a bit early to tell but with about 75 rocky, muddy, mountain miles on them I expect they will live up to my expectations over the long term for a hiking/backpacking boot. I must say that my all time favorite boot was the Legacy; I liked the relative stiffness of the leather compared to that of the Mattertal. I am concerned about how this softer leather will hold up especially in retaining the shape of the boot; time will tell. They do offer excellent ankle roll protection (which the Legacy lacked), are very comfortable and required no break in period.

That is awesome we were able to point you in the right direction and recommended the Men's Mattertal GORE-TEX boot for you! Thank you for getting these outside on the miles of mountains you hike! We would love an update on their performance when you have taken them on more adventures.

  • Light boot with good ankle bracing

I just got these boots so can't really say much about durability and performance under medium hiking conditions. I already own a pair of Merrell Perimeters that superficially appear to be a better boot. This boot does look flimsy compared to the Perimeter. The shoelaces are thin (they work fine but look like spaghetti straps). while it says full grain leather, I am not sure that I can maintain these with real leather polish or boot creams (almost looks like suede). The tongue has excellent padding though I have always found it useful to add an after market insert for additional arch support and padding. Fortunately I have slender feet so the addition doesn't squash my foot. They are much lighter than the Perimeter, definitely a bonus. The softer leather upper and additional ankle padding provide for excellent ankle support and stability. I think that Merrell may have cheapened out and added more rubber to cut down on expensive leather. It also could be that waterproofing qualities are enhanced by the addition of rubber. The Gore-Tex lining is holding up great after 3 weeks of casual hiking and my feet are relatively dry. So far so good, it would be useful to have product support provide care instructions.

Thank you for getting these outside! We would love to hear back after these get a few more miles on them, but enjoy hearing about your initial thoughts on this hiker. For cleaning and maintaining this style, we recommend a product line called NikWax, they have a number of different waterproofing and conditioning treatments.

This review is actually about two things 1st The customer service at Merrell is totally outstanding. When I see a review stating that there was no reponse I know it slipped thru the cracks. I have always gotten a response in a timely manner. The service has been courteous and rep pleasent. 2nd On this boot what is it suppose to be? leather, suede, cloth and rubber just doesn't mesh. These were just plain weird and not what I look for in a hiking boot. Since these were a comp replacement I can't send them back so I guess I'll donate them and buy a different pair

Thank you for the complements about our customer service team. Sorry to hear those weren't what your were looking for in a hiking boot. Thank you for your review.
