I have the Boulder version and they are fantastic boots, and have been very comfortable from the first time I slipped my feet into them. I do a lot of walking on rough ground surfaces and the pair of boots that I am wearing right now, were put into use in mid September 2013. (This entire dry season plus.) I will put the replacement set into use as soon as the first rains fall, in the next week or so. I always purchase two pair, as I generally do not have access to good shopping here. I am looking forward to equally good service with the new pair.

I really enjoy wearing the Phoenix boot. It is light and comfortable from the moment I put it on. It especially easy on my feet in the rough, rocky terrain of Afghanistan. I've noticed that many of the special forces from the U.S. wear the Merrell brand as well. I ordered a half size larger this time from my first time last year. I found the wide size to be a little tighter on my feet previously. Going up a half size from what I usually wear has made all the difference. Great boot, I highly recommend it!

Disclosure: I haven't had these long enough to know how well they hold up. Usually, I wear boots and shoes in the $150-200 range, with Gore-tex and Vibram soles. Like so many of us in this down economy, I needed to economize this time. I was NOT disappointed. In fact, I'm glad I bought these! When I got them, I was impressed with the fit. Great for us wide-foot folks. No need to wait for them to stretch. Good ankle support, sole is a good mix of flex where you want it, and stiff where you don't. The instep isn't super short, which is nice for high-instep folks like me. I bought these strictly for hiking, and so far they're doing great. They're fairly light, which is critical on long treks. I was concerned about the lack of a Vibram sole, but the traction has been comparable to my Merrell Trail Gloves with Vibram soles, which is to say excellent! The grip is solid on rock, and the fairly high-profile lugs really bite into dirt or turf. Haven't been out on a wet mountain yet, but their traction on wet pavement and tar suggests they'll do quite well on wet rock. They're not especially breathable, but no more so than any other waterproof boot. Wear a good wicking sock, and apply a liberal dose of foot powder (talc, not corn starch) before your hike. Try bringing a little bottle of foot powder, and reapply during a break. Thanks Merrell, for making quality $100 hiking boots! They'll be climbing Mount Katahdin this Summer! NOTE: You'll see people complain about these boots not being waterproof. They complain about that in most boot reviews. Here's why: a waterproof leather boot, whether Gore-Tex or M-Dry, has a waterproof membrane UNDER THE LEATHER. If your boot gets wet, the leather can get wet, but the water doesn't pass beyond the membrane under it. The feel of wet leather can make your feet feel wet. Add to that sweaty feet because you wore cotton socks, and you'll swear they leaked! A common complaint is that the boot was waterproof for a few months, then it failed. Boots usually come with a temporary water-repellent coating on the leather. This coating wears out. Cleaning it with a good boot cleaner can restore it for a while, but you need to reapply an appropriate water-repellent coating periodically. This will keep the leather from wetting out, and make it last longer.

I use this product to hike the back trails of the north Georgia mountains. These trails involve multiple river and stream crossings. The waterproof aspect of these boots is exceptional. Not to mention the awesome comfort and durability. Great product!

Merrell's Reply:

If only those hikers could talk about all the trails they have traveled. We bet the views are beautiful in the Georgia mountains. Please share a few on our Merrell Facebook page.

And said that he wore them everyday, all day long, in the store, and his feet felt great after a 10-hour stint. I bought them for my son and he loves them, claims they are incredibly comfortable. A great product.
