I have put these shoes through absolute hell. Merrell Shoes are by far the toughest I have ever owned. I am a Merrell, and first bought a pair of mid hikers about 8 years ago mainly so I could wear my last name. I have only wore Merrell ever since. it was a warm day(60 deg F. or so) in Feb two years ago the I got my first Ventilators. when I stepped out of the local shop I immediately felt a nice cool breeze through out my feet. Nice! I was a bit worried about the strength of the vents. Well after a year and a half of mt.boarding, kite ground boarding and doing 20-30 foot beach jumps with my kite on sand mud hard pack and submerged in water. they are still my back up shoes. I now have another pair and plan to replace them with the mid height before leaving with my son (5) and brother on a 5 month trek to Costa Rica and back. There are many videos on my website proving the "ABSOLUTE HELL" that I put my Merrell footwear through on a day to day basis. PROPS TO MERRELL!!! I have Merrell's for all seasons.

My feet are size 7 1/2. After reading several of the reviews here, I was convinced that I should get an exact size (7 1/2) of the Merrell Moab Ventilator (beige color). I wore the shoes for almost 2 weeks to try to 'break it in' before I went for a week long hiking trip in Newfoundland. I soon realized that I should have got a 1/2 size bigger (i.e. size 8 for me) even though I was not wearing particularly thick cotton socks for this trip. During the hiking trip my toes were constantly jammed against the front inner end of the shoes, and soon I developed bruises on the tips of my toes following my daily hikes. Sometimes, I even had to walk with all my toes bent, and walked slowly on my heels to overcome the discomfort . All in all, I should have bought a half size bigger for my feet and not listened to the advice on this site.

These are probably the best shoes I've ever had, ever! They have fantastic build and quality to begin with, and have certain sturdiness that most other types of brands do not offer. They are fantastic on all surfaces and give you a comfortable and solid footing whether you're using it on uneven surfaces or in city streets like I usually do. I have to say that transitioning from sneakers to these was hard in the beginning because the rubber in the front squeezes the interior inwards compressing the toes. This took a bit of "breaking in" to get used to. I strongly suggest people who want to buy this model to consider this particular caveat, especially if people have wider feet. Overall I'm very pleased with them and have decided to get my dad a pair!

Merrell's Reply:

These are a perfect shoe if you are going to do a lot of walking. Just like you said, we do recommend breaking them in first because they are a firmer rubber than your traditional sneaker. We appreciate your great input and feedback on these Moab's.

This is my first Merrell purchase, and I can safely say I will be making more purchases in the future. I was a little worried after reading reviews that I should have ordered a size smaller, but that wasn't the case. They fit true to size. I also love it is a Michigan based company that is not too far away from my hometown in southwest Michigan. I love how the company takes part in the environment. Keep up the good work Merrell!!

I bought these shoes 1 year ago and it was a great decision to do so. I had a couple conditions I needed for a pair of hiking shoes: can sustain tons of abuse, horrible conditions (water, mud, snow, ice) and be breathable. Well these shoes are it! Within that year these shoes have been worn almost everyday in 3 different continents (US, Australia, Antarctica) where being used as a zipline guide in Alaska, climbing trees for 4 months straight, hiking/working trails in Denali, on a sailboat for weeks in the southern ocean, hiking some horrible bush terrain in Tasmania, heaps of tracks in New Zealand in high country, and used in McMurdo Station, Antarctica to hike, work, walk over ice-shelves, etc.... Basically it's my everyday shoe in extreme conditions or to walk the dog with. The only regret is I should have bought the gortex version!

Merrell's Reply:

It sounds like these fit the bill perfectly! Thank you for taking these everywhere with you and traveling the world. We cannot wait to hear about the new adventures to come with your Moab Ventilators.
