Excellent! I needed shoes for hiking through rivers and caves in Thailand and these really did the job well. I wore synthetic fibre trainer liners inside the shoes and found that water was expelled very quickly and efficiently in the first couple of steps back on dry land and my feet soon felt dry. Although the shoes didn't quite dry out overnight and felt damp to the touch the next morning, they did not feel damp on my feet and were quite comfortable to wear. I found the soles provided good grip on wet stones and in mud and the reinforced toe provided protection against stones. Generally, these were great shoes to wear when hiking on dry land and in the water.

Disappointed Really good fit, and the device around the Achilles’ tendon only burst open my left ankle after I’d walked quite a distance; otherwise they were very comfortable. My real disappointment was that they aren’t even remotely water proof. I really don’t think that it’s clear enough from the description that these shoes won’t in fact keep your feet dry. I got too excited when I picked them up on a dry day, and went for a wander along dry pavements to try them out. I wish I’d noticed sooner that they were effectively full of small holes, and returned them; they’re not much use for walking on a rainy day to the allotment, which is really what I bought them for.

Hello Olsonar, Thank you for your review. Please note that the Waterpro Maipo is a hydro shoe designed for its use in water (rivers, etc) and therefore its made out of mesh so it is not sold as a waterproof shoe. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact our Customer Service Team so they can advise you on the best style for you. Regards, The Merrell Team

Looks good and feels REALLY good! Glad shoes were a little bit big so can wear padded socks if nescessary. Want to wear them for cycling too but going walking in Ibiza next week for their first real outing!

Poor adjustability, weird arch support These shoes dry very quickly , but that has really been their only redeeming feature after about 100km on the trail. It seems as if they are aggressively trying to correct pronation, but the affect just makes for swelling on the inside of the foot and ankle for me. There are lots of straps and buckles that seem like they would let you adjust them, but they are sewn to the upper at several points, which prevents any reasonable adjustment and mostly makes opportunities for hotspots and other discomfort. I usually have luck with Merrells for light hiking, but these have been a real disappointment.

Newbie hiker This is my first pair of trail/hiking shoes. I've used it two times already in two different mountains. The first one was a dry, dusty, grassy mountain and the second one was on a rocky, slippery, with rivers to cross. I can say that the shoes is really great. I tend to slip a lot (not because of the shoes but because I'm clumsy) and the shoes has really nice grip. Walked with it for at least 4-5 hours and my feet are not complaining.
