The last several pairs of hiking shoes I have bought have all broken down within 4-6 months. These are holding together extremely well. I like to have one pair of shoes for everything. I purchased the model previous to these about a year ago (which are virtually identical to the updated model) , and they still look like new. I wear them all day, everyday. I’ve worn them in deep snow, backpacking, mountain biking, traveling, running, at work, and in class. When it snows, I just wear thicker socks, and my feet stay plenty dry. I wouldn’t try scaling a mountain with them in the winter, but for shoveling the sidewalk they work just fine. I would have given them 5 stars, but the GORE-TEX doesn't breathe as well as it could. However, the new model uses GORE-TEX XCR instead, which should resolve this issue anyway.

  • Very disappointing lack of durability in Gore-Tex lining

Overall, I couldn't recommend them based on my experience.I've had a pair of the non-Gore-Tex Moab Ventilators for about 2 years. I've worn them almost every day since then and they are still in pretty good shape (although one of the laces on that pair had a fault and the outer weave just unravelled after only a couple of months). Having quite narrow feet I often struggle to find approach shoes that fit well, but the size 12 Moabs were absolutely perfect; possibly the most comfortable shoes I've had in decades. So, a pair in the Gore-Tex version seemed the natural choice for use on more adventurous rambles and in foul weather. With this in mind I got a pair for Christmas 2009 (around 18 months ago). I wanted to keep the Gore-Tex pair in good shape (given the cost of them), so I've only worn them when absolutely necessary: under half a dozen weekend country walks, a week-ish of cycling commutes in wintry weather, a weekend trip to the Lakes and, just last week, a long weekend in Berlin (for which much rain was forecast, even if it only actually rained once). In total, I've probably had about a month or so's (maybe two at most) wear out of them. I was pretty disappointed then (to put it mildly) to find that when it did rain this weekend, one of them was letting in water. On closer examination, a patch above the toes in the right shoe had worn through the Gore-Tex liner. I would certainly expect a near-£100 shoe to last a lot longer than this. When we got back to the UK I felt inside the right-hand (non-Gore-Tex) Ventilator and there was no damage to the inner surface (despite having had around ten times the wear of the Gore-Tex pair). On the plus side, they are comfortable, if not quite so much as the Ventilator version of the Moab and the breathability was as expected. However, overall, I couldn't recommend them based on my experience.

  • Great shoes but small sizing and one of mine developed a squeak after one year

I have received my third pair of Moab Gore-Tex shoes today. I have re-ordered because both my previous pairs have been very comfortable, grippy and had good water-proofing. Unfortunately though, the sizing has come up smaller again than my previous pairs. I am normally a UK size 11 in other shoes, however my last two pairs of Moab shoes have had to be UK size 12 to fit perfectly. I am disappointed therefore to find that my third pair of these in UK size 12 are too small for me. I'm pretty sure that my feet have not grown as I am nearly 40 years old! This is quite frustrating. Additionally, I may as well point out that my last pair of Moab Gore-Tex have developed a very annoying squeak in one shoe that I cannot identify or find a solution to. They are just over a year old, so are now out of warranty, but still have life left in them. I going to have to resign them to gardening duties before their time, because of this annoying squeak.

Hi, I am from the Philippines, I am glad to own merrel moab shoes, I only use this shoes from home to office. Here in manila, we only have 2 season wet and dry. Instead of using my car, I take the train daily to save fuel, in order to be able to take the train (light rain transit) you have to climb the stairs, mind you it is very very slippery, I never had any issue with slippery terrain with this shoes. When buying shoes I consider safety first before comfort and lastly style. The shoes breathes, I sweat a lot. But using this shoes and dry fit sock, my feet always felt dry and comfy. It took me sometime to save for this shoes, it is very comfortable and i wear it almost everyday but after 5 months its is no longer water proof (leaks!!!) :( I failed to read the post of users here in the board. I wish merrel could improve this moab. Even though the waterpoof ability of shoes lasted only for 5 months, it is the most comfortable shoes i have ever worn. i will still recommend people to buy merrel shoes. There is no question that merrel produces high quality shoes. I have purchased this at a Merrel concept store in taguig. (Sorry merrel I like to rate this a five star but it broke down on its 5th month :(

Bought these shoes as was told by Cotswolds "they are fully waterproof and no maintenance needed. Had these shoes for about a month, both shoes leaked(walking in the rain), toes were wet. Re-waterproofed these shoes with nikwax leather and fabric proof, still they leak. These are the most comfortable walking shoes i've had, but disappointed with the gore tex liner letting in water.

Merrell's Reply:

Hi there, Thanks for your review, if the shoes are leaking then it sounds like there is an issue with the waterproof lining of the footwear. As they are only a couple of months old, we would recommend that you return them to the retailer in line with our 1 year warranty. - The Merrell Team
