Mudder on! These were in the catalog, and since I had a Tough Mudder coming up, I thought I would give them a try. These have a slim fit, and that works great for me with my narrow foot. Usually get a half size up for my trail/running shoes, but these still give me plenty of room with my regular size. Shoes are very light and water friendly, with minimal mud/sand/dirt getting into the shoe!

My new holy grail for OCR. These are perfect for running an obstacle course race. Because I am a poor planner, I received them the day before running a 5k OCR and had no time to do helpful things like test them or break them in. Since I've always had good luck with Merrell shoes (all of my previous OCRs were run in an old pair of Barefoot Pace Gloves), I decided to throw caution to the wind and just go for it. They do fit large. I always wear an 8 in Merrell, and I definitely had some room to spare. I think this is because the toe box fits wide, especially on my narrow foot. I probably could have stood to go down a half size, but since I've now crawled through two feet deep mud with the consistency of brownie batter in them, this is a moot point. Speaking of mud, these things stay put like no one's business. Even though they felt a little roomy, at no point did I feel like I was going to lose a shoe. They have great grip and a good amount of stability. The bottom of my foot felt well protected, even on uneven ground with rocks and tree roots jutting up. I have a pretty normal arch but because of how narrow my heel in particular is, I like running shoes to have more stability, especially across the top of the foot. With the amazing speed lacing system in these shoes, my foot felt cinched in and secure, even when sprinting and negotiating hills. All of this while keeping the dexterity that I loved in my previous barefoot shoes. By the end of the race, all of my teammates were ready to order their own. I look forward to seeing how these work out on more challenging, longer OCRs!

Perfect Tough Mudder footwear Wore this pair with some Merrell smart wool socks for TM New England 2017. From the grippy treads to the drainage mesh and foot-hugging built-in sock, these were the best thing to wear. I never risked losing a shoe in the mud, my feet were comfortable as the water drained out, and the shoes were light on my feet all 10 miles.

Big toe box I got a size 8, as that's what I normally wear, but they feel too big in toe box and too long. Since one usually wears as thin as socks as possible during a mud run, having a shoe that is a little on the long side is not the direction the shoe should go. If anything it should be a little smaller than a normal size. I wore them around the house, but they just feel to loose. Didn't wear them on a trail because I didn't want to lose the ability to return them. Going to try out a 7 1/2 and see if they feel better. They are lightweight, and I love they picked up on Salomon's lacing system.
