I bought this shoe for a 50 mile mountain ultra and it was excellent. It has just enough cushioning to protect feet from sharp rocks, and feels better on hard smooth trails and asphalt than similar shoes with rock plates. The fit is the same as other zero drop Merrell shoes, which is great for my feet. Seems more durable than last year's Ascend Glove so far.

Wow what can I say about this shoe. Just finished my first endurance race. Kusam Klimb on northern Vancouver Island. It is a 23km with the first 6km climbing to nearly 5000ft elevation gain. It is a high altitude , scrambling, mud, water, rain, rocks, ropes, snow, knee breaking, muscle fatiguing, heart pounding, excitement, and this shoe kept up real well. Ran through rivers and streams and the shoe expelled the water great. Still a very comfortable fit when the shoe is wet. The sole held up very well and kept the rocks at bay. The grip and Vibram sole produced exhalant traction going up in the mud and down the steep wet slope. I have bought 5 pairs of Merrell minimalist shoes in the past year or so, and was nervous to try the Bare Access Trail for the first time ever without a test run ,and on such a challenging race. You didn't let me down at all. Thanks Merrell for making such an amazing product.

  • Nice shoe - not wide enough for me

I liked my previous Merrell shoe, the ascend glove for feel and foot protection; the foot protection was by merit of its ground feel and sure-footed properties; not due to its sturdiness. My feet are wide and they split at the sides; maybe not a robust shoe or just too small in width for me. I took a chance on the bare access trail as I heard it was sturdier. It is sturdier and unfortunately is too narrow across the ball of my foot for me to use. Plenty spacious for toes and good length for me. (Size 14 Men's). I only recommend this if you have medium - narrow feet.
