Needed a shoe for rockhopping along boulders while fishing. It needed to be comfortable, grippy and able to drain water quickly. The Maipo fits all three of these criteria, while looking good to boot. On my feet they were comfy and very cool due to the mesh used. Fresh out of the box they lacked grip on the smooth rocks but after some roughing up and wearing in they performed fine. But... My only concern before buying them was reviews I consistenly read about the material loops holding the laces breaking. I was willing to look past this and give them a shot. They survived the four day fishing trip but the loops showed signs of wear - within a month they had snapped. This is a huge issue as you cant properly tie the laces up - even though the rest of the shoe is in excellent condition. If this method of securing the laces was fixed I would permanently have a pair of Maipos on my feet. As they are though I just cant justify buying them again - the reviews across the net show its a consistent design issue, not a bad batch or bad pair of shoes which is a real shame. Please Merrell - fix the design of the laces as the rest of the shoe is an absolute winner.

Bought these shoes because they were light and seemed like they would shed water. They feel great, not much support if you over pronate and have no orthotics in though. But other wise very comfortable especially without socks I find. The grip on the sole becomes fairly useless when wet especially when rockhopping but its fine on dirt. I wouldn't wear them on any sort of extended trip (more than one night) if you push yourself and your gear hard. I broke the fabric straps that hold the laces in within the first two hours of a summit climb in fairly wet but otherwise good conditions. They were replaced immediately by the store I bought them from so ill see how these ones go this weekend. Perhaps the strap failure was a lapse in production quality not sure. All in all buy them if you want comfort, a tight fit, great water shedding and a shoe lighter than socks. Avoid if you have to put a reasonable amount of confidence in your gear they may let you down. Have a look on the picture above you cab see how the lace is held every second loop by a strap that is stitched to the side its a great idea hopefully my new ones hold up. Andrew
