I am a Park Ranger working in Australia. I have just purchased my 3rd pair of Merrell Moab Goretex shoes. This has been over a 3 year period of wearing my shoes every day through rain, hail and shine. Very happy with the shoes - and considering the amount of punishment I put them through - happy with the wear and tear. Nice and ventilated in Summer, waterproof in winter and very comfortable!

After 6 months of continuous wear - my shoes are ready to go in the "just for a jog" pile. I spent a lot of time considering a variety of shoes, and in the store, the Moabs fit great, looked solid - and for my first trek, the Tour du Mont Blanc, they were a godsend. They survived a further few treks through Switzerland, Croatia and Slovenia. But now that the snow has arrived, I've noticed how much wear they've had - particularly around the outer foot. From a pair of Gore-Tex Cross Trainers, I expected to get at least a year out of them. But now I can't wear them to the shops without my feet freezing and the shoes soaking up water. I've applied two rounds of Nikiwax to try to help, but to no avail. Next pair: WILL NOT BE MERRELL.

I bought a pair of these shoes a few years ago now before going on holiday in New Zealand, I was very impressed with the comfort and fit of the shoe. I had no blisters at all despite all the walking we did while on holiday and have covered many kms since then. They served me well for the past 3 years, so much so I have just bought two more pairs while they were on special and shall be wearing them for some years to come. I'd love to try other Merrell shoes but my theory is if you are on a good thing, stick to it.

These have been the most comfortable shoes ever. They have been with me up mountains, through puddles, even a few pubs and they kept me dry the whole time. Will be getting another pair of Moab GTX.

Have now purchased two pairs of Merrell Moab shoes. Both wonderfully comfortable from the first time I put them on. Both initially purchased for walking overseas, although worn everyday for 5km round trip to work. First pair - Tan colour, Gore-Tex. Lasted 16 months before retirement. Tolerated rain. Wife complained they were the only shoes I'd wear. Loved them. Second pair - black/grey colour, Gore-Tex. Now about 8 months old. Material around heel (see picture) begun to wear very early on. Recently while overseas, despite being Gore-Tex model, didn't tolerate city rain. On three occasions left foot got wet...soaked throughout to sock and lining. Requiring removal of inner sole to allow them to dry out. So much for the Gore-Tex protection. Also second pair have developed a foot odour smell despite claimed antibacterial treatment to prevent smell. Unfortunately second pair have tainted experience, don't think I'll be purchasing another pair despite them being the most comfortable pair of walking shoes I've ever owned.

Merrell's Reply:
